Travel Time System
To provide motorists on Rhode Island’s interstates with up-to-the-minute traffic information, the TMC is now displaying Live Travel Times on message boards throughout the state as well as the TMC’s website. The travel time is computed using anonymous traffic data and speeds collected in real-time by Radar Vehicle Detectors (RVD) deployed throughout Rhode Island. In accordance with Federal guidelines, the travel time displays reflect the posted speed limits.

Performance Monitoring
In addition to using the RVD traffic sensors for displaying travel times, the TMC archives all of the data collected by the sensors into a database. This archived information is used to generate Historical Congestion reports and Performance Measures reports for highway segments in Rhode Island. These reports provide RIDOT and FHWA with metrics such as travel time reliability and are consistent with Federal guidelines.
